Successful Formal and Greek Week Champions!!

The Xi-Xi Formal went without a hitch on Saturday, as the brothers and their dates danced the night away at the beautiful Interncontinental Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. Thanks to Brother Scott Emerson, Formal Chair, for putting the formal together. Also, a shout out to all the alumni that came back for formal.

And even better: Xi-Xi are now the official champions of Marquette's Greek Week 2008!! After winning airband and having a successful day at the sporting events on Sunday, Xi-Xi is proud to take home this award. The other competing fraternities were Delta Chi, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Phi Delta, Triangle, and Sigma Lambda Beta.

Xi-Xi will have three new members of the executive committee for next semester: Brendan Kolasa (GP), Ben Ingraham (GMC), and Brian Michel (GS). Congratulations, gentlemen!

Xi-Xi Shows at Greek Awards

Congrats to the chapter for once again achieving the distinguished Greek Awards of "Most Outstanding Scholarship" and "Most Outstanding Leadership and Campus Involvement," both won by Xi-Xi last year.

On top of those awards for the chapter, Kevin Mulligan took home the "Freshman of the Year" award, and Alex Dresen took home the "Junior of the Year" award. Congrats, gentlemen!

Dinner a Success and Congratulations to Ray!!

First off, the philanthropy dinner was a huge success, raising over $1,000 for the Kappa Sigma Military Heroes fund. A huge thanks to all of the brothers, and especially D.J. Hohs for putting the event together.

Secondly, congratulations to Brother Ray Redlingshafer for winning the recent MUSG elections to become the next President of Marquette University Student Government! Along with his Executive Vice President, Kathleen Blaney, Brother Redlingshafer will be heading up the student body for the 2008/2009 academic year.

Lastly, congrats to Brother Brock Banks, the current MUSG president, on a job well done! We'll greatly miss Brock "Mr. President" Banks. This is the first time that the torch has been passed from one Kappa Sigma as MUSG President to another. Congratulations again, guys!

Philanthropy Dinner to Benefit Military Heroes Fund

Xi-Xi will hold its big philanthropy event of the semester on Friday, March 28th, at the Triangle Fraternity House at 4pm. The dinner will raise money for the Kappa Sigma "Military Heroes" Fund, which serves to aid those who serve our country and their families. Tickets are $5 each, and can be purchased from any brother of the Xi-Xi Chapter. Thanks to D.J. Hohs, current philanthropy chair, for setting up the event.

Xi-Xi Achieves "Action Chapter" Award

The Xi-Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma recently became one of the newest chapters of the Kappa Sigma fraternity to earn the distinguished "Action Chapter" Award, after meeting various criteria set up by the fraternity (including community service, philanthropy, and civic duty). A big thanks to Alex Dresen, current GMC of Xi-Xi, for pushing the chapter to achieve this distinguished honor.

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity recently revised its national philanthropy campaign from the Fallen Heroes Campaign to the Military Heroes Campaign (to support all of our military personel, not just the families of those who have passed away). To all brothers, alumni, parents, potential Kappa Sigmas, and friends:

You can ALL help the Xi-Xi chapter out tremendously with our fundraising efforts. As many of you know, we are looking for a house, among other financial struggles that young fraternities deal with. One easy way we have been making money is by doing online survey fundraisers. By signing up for this, you are in no way committed to doing the surveys. You would get 1-2 invitations by e-mail per week, and they take 5-10 minutes to complete. You don't want to do them? Just delete the e-mail. We earn 8-50 cents per survey, and we have just surpassed the $200 mark. Please help us out with our effort, and sign up as many people as you know who are interested. Xi-Xi's Spring 2008 recruitment officially kicks off tomorrow, Monday January 28th with our Open House event at 221 Renee Row. PLEASE BE THERE!! We want to see all of you! Talk with the brothers while enoying some great food. What more could one want?

MU Fraternity Recruitment Begins...

This week kicks off recruitment for all of Marquette University's fraternities, and the Interfraternity Council is holding a few events:

Tuesday, January 22nd: Poker Night (AMU Ballroms, 6-8pm)
Thursday, January 24th: Fraternity Information Night (AMU Ballrooms, 6-8pm)

Check back in a few days to see the finalized events for Kappa Sigma's recruitment events, which will take place next week. Expected events will include an Open House and the classic "Circle of Fire."

Lastly, don't forget to check out Xi-Xi's own Mike Movido for an acoustic night at the Annex this Friday, January 25th, from 7-9pm.

Kappa Sigma held their 2nd Recruitment Event of the Fall today at the Annex where everyone enjoyed some free food, some free soda, and some bowling! The event was a success and an overall great time for all those who came.

We look forward to seeing even more faces at our next Recruitment Event on Sunday, September 9 called Circle of Fire. A Kappa Sigma recruitment event tradition, Circle of Fire is a fantastic event with not only great cigars and wings, but with a great opportunity to meet and chat with the members of Kappa Sigma.

Don't worry, our Build Your Own Sundae event scheduled for Saturday has been moved to next Saturday, and may even include a twist! More to come on this exciting upcoming event! Be sure and check the blog for updates on the Recruitment Events coming up.

This is just a friendly reminder that Kappa Sigma will be holding its second Recruitment event TOMORROW, Friday, September 7th from 4 PM to 6 PM (Changed from 5 PM to 7 PM).

Recruitment Event #1- Open House

Kappa Sigma held its first recruitment event of the Fall 2007 semester on Wednesday night. The first event was the annual Open House, which took place at 924 N. 17th St., Apt. #221. Kyle Orthober, the Kappa Sigma Recruitment Chair, organized the event. Papa John's Pizza, soft drinks, and Ice Pops were served to everyone who attended.

In addition to food and drinks, the event included breakout sessions of video game playing (Mario Kart on N64) and channel surfing on the tube. The two most popular shows were the Brewers v. Astros game on FSN and the Cubs v. Dodgers game on WGN. Even though not everyone could agree whether to root for the Brewers or the Cubs, each person left satisfied with his team's performance because both teams eventually won their respective game.

The next planned recruitment event is Bowling at the Annex on Friday from 5PM until 7PM. FREE food and beverages will be served during this event. A list of our recruitment events for the week can be found on the right hand side of the blog. Please be sure to stop by an event or two and meet the members of Kappa Sigma!

Second Annual Diabetes Awareness BBQ a Success!

Did you know that nearly 6.2 million Americans, or 1/3 of all people in the United States with diabetes, don't even know that they have the disease? Or that long term consequences of the chronic illness include blindness, amputation of limbs, heart disease, and stroke? The Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Marquette is well aware of these facts and, consequently, is dedicated to making more people aware of the disease with hope that a cure for diabetes will one day be found.

Earlier today, Kappa Sigma, with money from the MUSG SOA fund, held its second annual Diabetes Awareness BBQ. More than 130 students, administrators, and members of the Marquette Greek community lined up to get free servings of hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, and beverages. In addition, pamphlets with important facts about diabetes were made available to all of those who attended to help spread awareness about the disease. Also, all of the tables were decorated with signs, each of which had written on it a different fact about diabetes. Many who attended the event noted that they had learned something new about the disease as a result of the information they received at the BBQ.

Brother Alex Dresen was charged with organizing the event. He did a wonderful job gathering all of the food and materials as well as delegating duties to members of the chapter. Most of the Brothers in the fraternity were able to stop by to help at the grill or pass out information. We are very thankful for everyone who attended the event, especially Colin Monahan who helped out at the grill for most of the afternoon. Thanks Colin!

Overall, the event was a success! Kappa Sigma will continue to spread awareness about diabetes and raise money for the American Diabetes Association by passing out information and selling red bracelets in the AMU. But, most of all, the chapter looks forward to next September when it will get a chance to put on the third annual Diabetes BBQ!

Hello everyone and welcome to the new Marquette Kappa Sigma Blog! This blog will be an excellent resource for events, occasions, and other things taking place with Kappa Sigma at Marquette. Be sure to check back often for updates!

The Brothers of Kappa Sigma are excited to be back on campus for another terrific year! Last year, Kappa Sigma received a number of honorable distinctions including Chapter of the Year, the Award for Outstanding Leadership and Campus Involvement, and the Award for Community Service. Kappa Sigma will kick off the new school year with a BBQ for Diabetes Awareness. This event will take place this Tuesday from 11AM-2PM on Schroeder Field.
